Smart surfaces of biobased materials: IV. Dynamic surface effects in films of F-containing cellulose esters Ulrike Becker and Wolfgang Glasser Biobased Materials/Recycling Center, and Department of Wood Science and Forest Products Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Abstract: Dynamic surface phenomena were examined in films of fluorine (F)-containing cellulose derivatives. The derivatives were either statistical F-esters or F-terminated segments. Dynamic wetting force measurements indicated hysteresis behavior in all films. The hysteresis depended on kinetic (water sorption and reorganization) and thermodynamic (surface roughness and surface coverage with F-moieties) factors. Consecutive force loops revealed an increase in the wetting force with increasing loop number, indicating an increased hydrophobicity of the surface. The force increase was determined to be due to water sorption as well as surface reorganization. In increase in the size of the F-groups signified a decrease in reorganization rate due to a decreased mobility of the group. The process of reorganization was fully reversible, a behavior which is congruent with the definition of smart behavior.

Smart Surfaces of Biobased Materials . II . Micelle - Formation in cellulose esters with F - functional endgroups

The solution and film-forming behavior of fluorinated (F)-terminated CP segments was investigated. The solutions of all segments examined exhibited typical critical micelle concentration (CMC) behavior with the CMC depending on the molecular weight of the CP segment and on the type of F-group. Solvent cast (from THF) blended films containing CP and the F-terminated segments showed a linear decr...

Smart Surfaces of Biobased Materials . III . Surface segregation in Cellulose Ester Films

The surface of solvent cast films of blends of cellulose propionate and fluorine (F)-containing cellulose derivatives was examined. Static wetting force measurements of blends showed a sharp decline in wetting force at low blend concentrations of the Fspecies. This indicated enrichment of the F-containing derivative at the surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of blends revealed a sur...

Surface Segregation Phenomena in Blends of Cellulose Esters

The principle of surface segregation and subsequent self-assembly of mixtures of molecules has been utilized to create cellulosic films that have properties characteristic of smart materials. This has been achieved by solventcasting a blend of cellulose propionate and an fluorine (F)-containing cellulose ester derivative. Evidence suggests that surface segregation of the F-containing species ta...

Moisture-responsive films of cellulose stearoyl esters showing reversible shape transitions

Moisture-responsive materials are gaining greater interest for their potentially wide applications and the readily access to moisture. In this study, we show the fabrication of moisture-responsive, self-standing films using sustainable cellulose as starting material. Cellulose was modified by stearoyl moieties at first, leading to cellulose stearoyl esters (CSEs) with diverse degrees of substit...
